"Sunday, the 21st about 2 o'clock the drums beat the assembly, and in ten minutes we were on our march for Bull Run having heard the enemy were waiting to receive us, our troops then numbering 25 or 30 thousand which were divided into three columns ours under Col Hunter taking the right through a thick woods. About eleven o'clock as our pickets were advancing through the woods a volley was poured in upon them from behind a fence thickly covered with brush; the pickets after returning the shots returned to our regiment and we advanced double quick time yelling like so many devils" Samuel J. English

Gettysburg
Gettysburg was the last MAJOR battle of the civil war. It was a 3 day long battle. Gettysburg is located in well... Gettysburg Pennsylvania. The general of the battle wanted to get the Union army and Washington DC to isolate them and put an end to the war. AS they marched north all roads converged on Gettysburg. On the first day the confederate army was not sure how many troops the Union had, so they were cautious in their attacks. On the second day
more Union troops arrived and occupied the high ground (Cemetery Ridge). On the 3rd and final day, in one final attempt to overrun the Union army , General Lee sent his entire force across an open field straight at the Union army. The Union Army won the battle in the end.“Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”
